FMP Evaluation

I was assigned a task to create a product for the Bath Chronicle to help them get more readers. My product was a webpage redesign of their ‘What’s On’ section. I did this because the current ‘What’s On’ Section isn’t very good and could do with a lot of improvements. In the final design there were a few strengths and weaknesses.

The page colour, layout, text, images and buttons all helped the page a lot and made the product great because it was pretty and easy to navigate around. Sadly some of the buttons were a let down and didn’t work. Some of the background shifted on each page. The Bath Chronicle logo occasionally moved slightly when changing to a new page. The page wasn’t full, there is a little gap down the outside which I would have liked to fill. And finally some of the images didn’t belong to me which could be a copyright issue. If they were to use my product I’d have to change the images or ask the original owner for permission.

The main theme of the page was to do with the Bath Chronicle. The background was Blue with white text just like the real Chronicle’s webpage. I was almost influenced to change it slightly by many different websites but in the end kept the blue and white. A few websites I went on for influence were ‘The List’ Newspaper Website and ‘Total Guide To Bath’; they helped me come up with the channel navigation and helped work on text and colour.

I tried to change the colour to see if it would make a difference by making it red. But in the end I kept the blue and didn’t bother with the red mainly because it didn't really improve it and it was important to keep the blue theme which the Chronicle always uses.

A design similar to mine is ‘Total Guide To Bath’, they have the same kind of layout and button colours that I have. I used them as an inspiration when creating mine. Now comparing the two, ‘Total Guide To Bath’ Is a lot different to mine. Even though I based it on ‘Total Guide To Bath’, The similarities are the button colour, font and background colour.

The main things I tried to change and develop the most was research. I needed to do a lot of research filming information about places around Bath that tourists might want to visit that could go on the ‘What’s On’ section. I also tried hard on design. Trying to make it work the with Bath Chronicle fonts and seeing what it would be like with different colours.

I completed everything I set out to do and even added a few things. I turned some images into buttons that take you to the website that the topic is about. That I originally wasn’t going to do but did in the end. I added a few things but apart from that nothing really changed.

The client said they were already planning on doing my idea. In a few months they are going to redesign the websites ‘What’s On’ section. So in a way my idea might change the way they redesign their website. They might actually use my project. I felt really happy to know that my idea was kind of going to be used.

I could have added more information to each page: I only had 3 things to do on each page; only 3 restaurants, only 3 shops, only 3 museums; I could perhaps have included more information. It was important to have quality rather than quantity.

The work seems appropriate for the final project. The client didn’t complain about anything and said the project was a great idea. It answered the brief very well.

I think the pitch when really well. The client or James never said I did anything wrong. James did give me a 1 minute left warning and I rushed the ending a bit which he did notice. However it went better than I expected. I was worried I didn’t have enough information but turns out I nearly ran over time. The feedback from the client was that the Chronicle are already planning on updating the ‘What’s On’ section anyway. She said I did the speech really well. James said I did the speech good too. He said the idea was clever. Next time I need to try and make my presentation shorter and not rush towards the end.

Progress: Research

Before I began making the Product I did a lot of research trying to find things around Bath and how to get to them.

I also found many different websites similar to what I was making and finding where they went wrong and what I could use from their websites.

The colour and font used for 'The Guardian'
is very similar to what I chose to do

Lots of the websites I liked at didn't have much information about how to get to these places. What bus to take? Is it close to the railway station? Are there taxis near by? etc. This is something I have chosen to include in my website.

Peer Assessments

We recently all assessed each others google briefs and bloggers. Here is the feedback people gave me
Seb assessed my Brief

I originally put my google docs in the wrong place in my brief. I have now moved them so its better. All my links work so everything is ok in my Brief.

Seb also gave me feedback on my Product: He said he liked it a lot but maybe add another colour or make some stuff transparent. He liked the design, concept, colours and where the logo is positioned. He also said he could see the Bath Chronicle using this. He was impressed with the interactive buttons

Progress: The Last Week

I have got a lot done. I only have 3 pages left to edit out of 8. I need to add a few more buttons to pages 1 to 5. But overall everything is slowly getting done. By Tuesday Afternoon I hope to have the website done.

Assignment 3: Feedback

My feedback from my pitch:

James said it would be a good idea to do a video showing these locations around Bath to see how busy they are, what the atmosphere is like, etc. He also said I need to think about Video and what to do with it. I need to come up with a name and where it will sit on the website

Ed liked the colour coding and agreed that this is a good idea. Maybe do a monthly video thing instead of a weekly because I might run out of stuff in a week.

Possible Colours For Section

Today I went on to Adobe Kuler to come up with different colours for my website section.
These are some of the colours I think are good.
I like the light red and green in this photo
because its not to bright and is very
similar to the Bath Chronicles
just different colour but same lighting.

I like these colours because they are also very similar to the Chronicle
and there not to bright but very smooth colour.

I like the blue in this photo because it is similar to the Chronicle,
I also like the other colours because they are too very similar brightness
to the Chronicle.

These blues are a lot like the Chronicle
and my section could be blue just like their
paper but maybe a dark or light kind of blue.

What I'm planning on doing today

Today I will be experimenting with colour trying to find one that matches Bath Chronicle or I might even try and make it look completely different so that it stands out more.

Then I will research different events around Bath to put in my section when finished.

Later or tomorrow I'll start sketching ideas for what it will look like.

Work With Steve

Today we went out around town and took photos of text.

Staff sign we found on our journey

We then edited the text and mashed them up in Photoshop

Different Website Designs

Bath Chronicle has a lot of white space but The Guardian stretches out to the edge.

Week On Chronicle 17/05/15 - 23/05/15

On the week I was on Chronicle, I spent a lot of the time making galleries and rewriting articles. The most exciting part of the week was Tuesday. We went on the roof of Waitrose to film a hawk scaring off seagulls. That was the highlight cause I got to film and edit the video that went on the Chronicle.

http://www.bathchronicle.co.uk/Bath-s-gull-problem-hawk-answer/story-26374354-detail/story.html

On Friday and Monday we made galleries. On Tuesday we filmed and on Wednesday we edited. Thursday we did a few more galleries.

I really enjoyed my week there. I'd love to do it again. If I could change anything I would have done more outside work. We spent a lot of time sat inside doing nothing but galleries. I really enjoyed the work we did on the roof of Waitrose and would have preferred to do that everyday inside of a lot of galleries.

I felt a little nervous when I was told I was working with the Bath Chronicle and when the week began I was ok. by the end of it I was really happy that I was apart of it and took a lot of information away with me.

All the assignments throughout the week were very easy and nothing seemed to be do difficult. A few of the galleries to a while to put together but everything seemed fine.

One of the projects we were set was filming on top of the roof of Waitrose. We went to the shop and asked at the desk. They took us upstairs and we spoke to the photography who took the hawk photos. We then meet the hawk and went onto the roof. After 30 minutes of filming, we came downstairs to sit and talk again. We then recorded the interview with the hawk trainer. Then the next day we edited the footage and Alex put it on the website.

I never thought I could filming a hawk going over my head or film an interview. I learnt some very good life skills.

I acted very mature through the week. Never did anything weird or crazy.

I found it very interesting being part of the print industry. I learnt some really cool stuff and found out how they act towards each other and how the industry acts.

I think I will be a lot better in college at writing articles and editing.

The skills I think I am now better at our:
Team Work
Professionalism
Communication
Friendliness
Creativity
Problem solving

English skills

My Work Today (How I Feel)

As the reflective posts on your blogs are currently a little under used I'd like you to start implementing a daily post with the following questions:

What I did today?
Today I was in a focus group and we were being asked questions about our ideas and then given feedback from our peers. We made blog post about what we had discussed and what our final idea was going to be.

What were the main three elements that helped me develop?
The focus group was alright but I felt confident about my idea and didn't need to change it much, but the feedback I got from James meant one of my ideas was not as good. The other three ideas he said were fine. It helped confirmed what I was thinking and what my final outcome became.

What did I struggle with today?
I would have preferred to be at a desk when writing notes because I find note taking difficult if its on my phone or any kind of tiny screen.

Was there a ‘what happens if’ in my day?
I thought of different ideas and what would have happened if I went down certain idea paths instead of others. Also what the outcome would be at the end.

Were there any eureka moments?
Today were not eureka moments but while I was on holiday thinking about what ideas to use. When I thought of something really clever about YouTube and acting (Two things i really enjoy doing), So that I thought was good cause I'm writing about something I enjoy.

How can I improve on today - tonight or tomorrow?
Focus harder, think more about my ideas and what I can do with them. Try and work better in a group, I found that I wasn't saying much or getting my point across very well.

My Ideas & Focus Group

My three ideas are:

1) YouTubers from Bath: Reviewing different YouTube Channels around Bath that young people might be interested in.

2) Acting & other events around Bath: Short video touring around Bath showing all the different places you can do certain things like The Egg Theatre.

3) Social websites: Reviewing different websites around Bath and in the general area, encouraging young people to check them out.

To make these work I need to have them over a longer period of time. They all seem like one off things. I need them to be weekly or even daily. For example a Social Media Roundup of all the new social media trends and hashtags. I could talk about different places around Bath each week like The Egg or the Bath Abbey, etc.

I'd like to do 'YouTubers From Bath'

Here is a list of YouTubers from Bath who I could write about:
Charlie McDonnell
Cold Steel Games
MB & Homeland
Dominic Döring
And More

The acting idea is good and if I did choose that because my other idea didn't work then I'd probably do a video layout and share it around Social Media.

If I do decide to do 'Acting & Events' instead of 'YouTubers From Bath' it might be good idea for me to look at TEDx, they do events and conference.

Focus Group Feedback:
In the group, everyone said the YouTubers and Events ideas were a lot better than the other two. When James came round to ask what all our ideas were, he said the websites from Bath ideas wasn't very good because lots of websites made in Bath are business and not that appealing.

Everyone also said that the website idea could work if I have a reason why young people would like these. If I did find websites its probably best they be appealing to young people and not to adults or businessmen.

So overall I plan to do 'YouTubers From Bath', that will be my main idea. I will ask people from the college if they know of any other YouTubers from Bath. I'll probably make a survey and post it on the group to find out if there are any other YouTubers. I'll also do some Secondary research online to try and find YouTubers from Bath. Hopefully then I'll have a good amount of research to start writing.

Case Study

The Newspaper
Bath Chronicle
The Date
Thursday 16 Jan 2014
The Event
Victorian grandeur

What You See
This page is very plain. It has simple text, a logo and only one picture. This is clearly not the main story because it says in the top right corner 19 (which probably means its page 19, so its quite deep inside the paper) Judging my the picture my first thoughts were it was about a Garden or something (because it shows a woman in a garden), but after reading a little and looking up what Grandeur meant, I found out the word meant splendour and impressiveness meaning this person loves feeling impressive.

Background
This paper was published on Thursday 16th January 2014, not to long ago. Its a simple story. Nothing to special behind it. It came out that time when winter was slowly going and spring was fast approaching meaning more people wanted to be outside. This story is about how people feel when walking around Bath. What they do around Bath and what their favourite places are. etc.

This story was the most popular in the paper. It was just one story of many. Its a nice story encouraging people outside of Bath to come and visit.

The Page
Nothing is really special about this page, like I said earlier it wasn’t the front page or anything. Its just a simple story that didn't come out to long ago. It came out over a year ago, Bath Chronicle has always had a great number of viewers. Loads of people have probably read this article.

Design
It has simple text, The logo of the paper, only one photo and no adverts which is surprising but it might have some further down below the cutoff. columns and sub headers are displayed around the page. Date and a website link.

Target Demographic

My target demographic is 17-24, the reason I chose 17 is because you are at the age where you start doing more. You can learn to drive, When you're 18 you can vote 19 and 20 year olds will mainly be at University or still in education. I think it would be good to start at 17 and not at 16 because at 16 you still feel young and you're still in school and not in higher education like College or Sixth Form. I know that “39.6% of young people aged between 18-24 enrolled for 2 or 4 year course in October 2008” this shows that even at 24 people are still in education.

I’d like to look at many different things. One beginning acting because I enjoy a lot and I know a lot of young people who feel the same way and would probably more likely to read about it than an old generation, Young adults probably would read about it as well but more likely young people because Media and Theatre is all around these days, tv programs and movies which a lot of young people really enjoy. I know this because a lot of people share stuff on Facebook and Twitter related to film. I’d like to use social media to help get my message across. I can also use this to promote the Bath Chronicle Facebook and Twitter page. I know that 39% of white teenager go online several times a day, 33% of black teenagers do & 26% of hispanic teenagers do.

People between 17-24 will more likely have a job compared to 19-24, the reason beginning people between 21-22 will probably be at University and won’t have time for a job. especially in the last year of uni meaning they might not have the money to buy a newspaper or might not have time. Like I said early 39.6 of young people between 18-24 are still in education whether it's College or University. These people will probably have loads to do unless there on a gap year but they could still have a job and stuff to get done. They might not have time to read a newspaper but compared to a generation between 20-30, younger people have more time to spend then they’ll ever have again so they are more likely to have the time to read a newspaper.

One of the biggest interests young people have is watching films and TV shows. Lots of them watch films will friends and girl/boyfriends. Its a nice thing loads of people do. There are lots of shows on TV that young people enjoy. More shows for girls than boys. Programs like ‘The Only Way Is Essex’ and ‘Keeping Up With The Kardashians’ are shows lots of young girls like but programs like ‘Top Gear’ are more likely to be watched by young boys. These are just a few examples of TV shows young people watch. I know this because these 4 shows often come up on Facebook shared and posted by friends of mine.

The Table blew shows what each group is with jobs, young people mainly fall somewhere between C1-E, the reason being is because they haven't had a chance to learn professional stuff and won't have gone to university by that point so they probably wouldn't be the most successful in there field.

I am going to try and make a story that is related to all these things, I will make a survey and ask people of the age demographic to answer it and hopefully it will help me to work out what people like and dislike, at the moment I have not much evidence and making a survey and gathering factual information will help me a lot. I am also planning on asking people in my local area and interviewing a few people and ask them questions similar to the survey. This means I'll have even more information to use.

Here is some information I have found about people who go on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

Analysis of requirements

  1. The main issue and problem is that they want to find stories that young people will enjoy. Lots of families read the newspaper but sadly a lot of young people (when they leave home) don’t continue reading, or going on the website. They want to encourage them to do that by having young people from City of Bath College to come up with ideas for articles that young people should hopefully enjoy. Young people from City of Bath College will be sent out to find stories around Bath. It turns out that the age range of people who read the Chronicle is between 16-35 and they have 57,000 readers.

  1. The client needs to resolve this problem so that they can encourage more people young people to continue reading their newspaper and learn about the news. More people reading their pages and going on their web sites means more money for them. They put everything from their newspaper onto the website which is a little weird considering the online version is free but has everything the newspaper does, which isn’t free. The Website is massive for them but the money still comes from the paper, from the magazines and adverts inside. Also it costs money to print so they need to make it back through the paper.

  1. The main four things the client needs are to find stories so that people read their papers and so more people visit their web sites. Finding stories that young people like would be hard for an adult to do because they don’t know what young people like. Its a clever idea to let young people find the stories for young people. The Chronicle needs views on their websites, newspapers and other channels. With better stories they will make more money and attract a new audience. This event also helps us/the young people to work good in a team and within an actual business. Its basically work experience. They also need to look after workers that make the newspaper so that everyone is happy. Money is important to print the newspaper and to pay people to advertise in their paper and on their website.

  1. The main demographic target is young people from about the age of 14/15 to mid 20s. Four needs that young people want to see in a magazine are something that is related to them and is more age appropriate for their generation. Stuff like sports, films, hobbies will attract the attention of young people. Also they need to advertise something that they like, for example, something for sale in the magazine or on the web site. They would probably like it to be online; young people are always using the internet and read more online than in magazines. They need something that makes them want to read more, therefore they need a story that really attracts their attention and doesn’t bore them half way through. It is also best to have access to facebook and twitter on the website. If teachers want to follow or like the Bath Chronicle to be updated then you could include links to both of them if not there already. Seeing as young people use the internet a lot, they might like it if there are links.

My Work Today (How I Feel)

Today we started are work on the Bath Chronicle. I sadly didn't arrive in college till gone 11am, I missed first lesson which set me back a little, I later tried to catch up in my lunch break with Rob. We looked through the brief to find out what i missed but never really got round to filling out the Analysis of the requirements. Later on in Ed's lesson, everyone continued their work on the Analysis of requirements. Sadly I had not started that because I was not in first lesson, I started it there and then in Ed's Lesson. I haven't finished the Analysis of requirements yet. Hopefully I'll finish it tomorrow in James and Ed's lesson. Overall today has been a good day, Its a shame I wasn't around in first lesson but sadly I had a family emergency the night before and was in A&E till gone 2am, which meant I didn't get much sleep the night before.
